March is Brain Injury Awareness Month! According to Brain Injury Association of America, each year an estimated 2.8 million Americans sustain a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). The CDC estimates 5.3 million people live with a disability because of a TBI. Common causes of TBIs are from motor vehicle crashes, slip and falls, direct blow to the head, or other rapid acceleration/deceleration of the head . Patients with mild TBI symptoms can recover within 3 months after the initial date of injury, while those with moderate to severe TBIs may take longer to heal. Common symptoms include, but are not limited to headache, seizure, confusion, lack of concentration, nausea, vomiting, light sensitivity, blurred or double vision, mood swings/personality changes, and sleep disturbance.
It is imperative to seek treatment early on with a neurologist and obtain proper diagnostics. TBIs require MRIs with Diffusor Tensor Imaging to fully assess the nature of the injury and its proper treatment. Additional diagnostics may be required to test for cognitive defects, etc. Brain injuries can impact multiple organ systems, cause disease, accelerate disease, and may put individuals at increased risk of death. An experienced personal injury attorney can help guide you through the steps to get the medical treatment needed.
